So sad to hear about the passing of Nancy Griffith. All kinds of music have influenced and kept me company through good times and bad, but I think I’ll always be a country girl at heart. Very sweet, but potentially very ornery!
While I was raised in the hood, just up the street from East Lake Golf Club, my mom was from rural Tennessee and my dad from Stone Mountain, Georgia so my first musical influences were definitely country, folk and bluegrass ones. My dad played guitar and sang, so I was around this kind of music from the time I was in the womb until I started developing my own tastes with the help of those mail in a penny offers from Columbia Records:)
This song and the story she tells before it, make me very sorry I never got to see her live. I love a good storyteller:) You get a three-for-one with this video – love all of these ladies. RIP Ms. Griffith. I’d like to think you’re somewhere jamming with John Prine right about now.
